The New York Yankees defeated Pedro Martinez and the Philadelphia Phillies (aka Philthies) last night at the Stadium. A.J. Burnett pitched the game of his career giving up 1 earned run, 4 hits, 2 walks with 9 strikeouts in 7.0 innings. Burnett was a former Met whom was traded to the Florida Marlins in 1998 as part of the Al Leiter deal. Future Hall-of-Fame Yankee closer Mariano Rivera was warming up early to come for the 2 inning save. Yankee manager Joe Girardi made the right choice vs. going to his middle relievers. They needed to split the first two games at home to stay in the series. Pedro Martinez pitched well for the Phillies until the 7th inning. Martinez gave up 3 earned runs, 6 hits, 2 walks with 8 strikeouts in 6.0 innings. The two sluggers were brutal last night as Ryan Howard wore the Golden Sombrero with 4 strikeouts and Alex Rodriguez (aka A-Roid) had 3 more. Mark Teixeira and Hideki Matsui hit solo homers for the Bombers and this may help Tex get going. There were two missed double plays in the game where the first base umpire blew each call. In the bottom of the 7th a liner was backhanded by Howard that was called out by the first base ump. He threw to 2nd base to force out Posada who was the runner on first. If he didn’t trap the ball he’d just step on first to complete the double play. In the next half inning Chase Utley was called out at first on a double play that was completely missed. Ryan Howard was left in the on deck circle and had to wait to the next inning to strikeout. The World Series moves to the City of Brotherly Love tomorrow night for Game 3.
