The Yankees took an early 3-0 lead on solo homers by Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez (aka A-Roid) and Johnny Damon. The Angels got a homer from Howard Kendrick in the 5th and a 2 run homer by Vladimir Guerrero in the 6th both off of Yankee starting pitcher Andy Pettitte. I can’t wait to hear what Mike Francesca says on WFAN today about Vlad. He and all his callers were yapping that Vlad’s done. In the 11th inning Girardi over managed and brought in Alfredo Aceves who gave up a single to Kendrick and a double to Jeff Mathis to give the Angels the 5-4 win. The Yankees were 0 for 8 with men in scoring position.
As reported by usatoday.com:
Joe Girardi again tapped the right arm that earlier seemed to have little need for anything but a celebratory post-game handshake.
This time he wanted Alfredo Aceves in place of Dave Robertson, who had come on in place of Mariano Rivera, who was pinch-hit for by Francisco Cervelli in the spot in the order once occupied by Johnny Damon but lost because Damon had been replaced by Jerry Hairston Jr., who came in for pinch-runner Brett Gardner, who subbed for designated hitter Hideki Matsui.
Got all that?
If not, you might just have reached the conclusion so many folks back in New York surely did as they screamed at their television sets.
Girardi just managed the Angels back into the series.
