The Philadelphia Phillies defeated the New York Yankees last night 6-1 at the Stadium on the arm of Cliff Lee. Two former teammates and AL Cy Young Award winners started last night but it was Lee who outpitched CC Sabathia. Lee went the distance for the complete game which would have been a shutout if not for the throwing error on Phillie SS Jimmy Rollins in the bottom of the 9th that allowed Jeter to score the only run for the Bombers in their last licks. Sabathia certainly pitched well enough to win but wasn’t Sabathia Like, just a bit off. I called the first of two homers by Chase Utley in the top of the 3rd. I was telling my Wife “he doesn’t want him to hit one into the short right field seats” and BAM, next pitch just landed exactly there. It would have been an out by 20 feet or more at Citi Field. Utley for good measure had a real blast later in the game for his 2nd homer. Lee pitched brilliantly, giving up one 1 run, none earned, six hits with 10 strikeouts in 9.0 innings. The pitch count was a nonissue as he mowed down the Yankees. Alex Rodriguez (aka A-Roid) had 3 strikeouts, looked lost and not confident at the plate. Jeter accounted for half the Yankee hits. Pedro Martinez starts tonight for the Phillies. Thank God Popeye is not there. He’d need a suit of armor in case Pedro wanted throw him down to the ground again. The heart of the Yankee batting order whiffed 7 times.
