My Wife and I were at Red Bull Arena last night to root on the Red Bulls as they hosted their hated rivals D.C. United as the game ended in a 0-0 draw. This takes the Red Bulls’ unbeaten streak to five games. The game started on the chippy side with both teams letting the other know how they felt about them. The Red Bull captain Juan Pablo Angel was kept in check by the D.C. United defense and only had two chances midway through the first half to score. Seth Stammler shot a rocket from 30+ yards out that sailed over the crossbar. Scoring in the 15th minute would have been nice for the home team. The play was slow and deliberate at times through the second half until the final whistle. The Red Bulls had some poor passing, including a lot of bad drop passes to nobody in the midfield throughout the game. The Red Bulls Tim Ream, Bouna Coundoul, Joel Lindpere and Tony Tchani played well. Tchani was substituted for Seth Stamler early in the second half and made the most of his time in the game. Stammler looked like he was running out of gas while Dane Richards and Sinisa Ubiparipovic on the wings were not in sync at all. Carlos Mendes continues to start in place of veteran Mike Petke and is playing well. I turned to my Wife and commented that D.C. United looked like they were playing for a draw and the Red Bulls should try to force the play. In the end the Red Bulls won their first Atlantic Cup since 2003 with their 2-0 win at D.C. earlier in the season and the draw last night. The supporters once again did an outstanding job and it is great sitting in Section 132 right next to them. The D.C. United supporters were loud until the Red Bull supporters marched into the arena and took over. We decided to walk over the Jackson St. Bridge from Harrison back to Newark and ended up saving time compared to walking to the PATH and waiting for a train.
