Glad I Saw Derek Jeter Tie Lou Gehrig with 2,721 Hits at Yankee Stadium

I was given tickets from my friend for last nights Yankee game. We were supposed to go together but he couldn't make it. I went with another good friend whom is a Red Sox fan of all things! A Met and Sox fan attending a Yankee game at Yankee Stadium, nice! We watched Derek Jeter tie Lou Gehrig's team hit record with 2,721. I had to cheer Jeter as I watched him lay down a perfect bunt for his first hit of the night as the Yankees were down 2-0 in the bottom of the first. Chamberlain was hit hard and gave up a homer and two runs to the Tampa Bay Rays in the top of the first. He went 3.0 innings giving up 2 earned runs before being taken out and was lucky to not give up 4 runs. Aceves and Albaladejo pitched very well for the next five innings to keep Tampa Bay off the board. Bruney pitched 2/3 of the 9th for the hold and Coke earned the 1 out save. Jeter hit a long ball over B.J. Upton's head which bounced over the centerfield fence for a ground rule double. Upton was playing a bit shallow in center and looked pretty lazy and had no chance of tracking it down. Two hits for Jeter. His next at-bat he lined one to right for his third hit. For his last at-bat he fought off 96 MPH fastballs and worked the count to earn a walk. In the 8th Swisher hit a grounder to first and the ball was thrown over the shortstop’s head. It looked like he had no throwing lane and threw over the runner’s head rather then sidestepping and throwing. The Rays would have had the double-play easily. Posada came in to pinch hit in the 8th and lined a 3-2 fastball over the rightfield fence to give the Yankees the 4-2 lead and secure the win. Jeff Niemann was great for Tampa Bay for 7+ innings but the wheels fell off for them in the 8th. I was amazed at all the HRs as a team the Yankees have. It seemed like everybody had at least 20 HRs. It sure pays to play at home in their new ballpark! Granted Gehrig got to 2,721 with a lot fewer at-bats but it is still a major milestone for Jeter. His consistency with no bad words spoken of him is truly amazing. The next plateau of 3,000 hits should come within the next two seasons and that will make him a shoo-in for the Hall of Fame. This season Jeter has surpassed the hit total by shortstops. His family was overjoyed as they showed them them on the jumbotron. Jeter tipped his helmet twice while standing on first. Yankee Stadium is beautiful. I was a Jeter fan for a night I guess and the Lobel's steak sandwich was excellent!
