Rangers Waived Rissmiller, Voros and Brashear Tuesday

The Rangers waived Patrick Rissmiller, Aaron Voros and Donald Brashear yesterday. Brashear and Rissmiller were no brainers, especially since Rissmiller played for about ten minutes with the Blueshirts and Brashear was just a bad concept from the beginning. I like Voros and he was a good team player who did everything he could to get as much ice time as possible but simply didn’t impress the coaching staff enough. Voros tried the role of enforcer and that experiment didn’t work. The solid fourth line play of Shelley and Prust meant more healthy scratches last year for Voros. I don’t know if the Rangers will buy out their contracts but that deadline is today at 5:00 PM EDT.
When talking about his role on the team with Rangers' beat writer Andrew Gross, Brashear was confused, asking, "Do they want a showman like they had in Orr, or do they want a guy who can play and fight?"
When I spoke with Nick Fotiu last summer at the Rangers Fan Fest I asked him about the Brashear signing and how I loved Colton Orr. Nick was quiet, he took the high road. After my comment of “Yeah I loved Colton Orr, he had heart, protected his teammates and we could have had him for less. I hate Brashear, always did, now I have to root for him? Maybe if he clears out in front of Henrik (goalie)…”
Nick Fotiu said to me, as he was clenching and skaking his right fist, “I WISH I WAS STILL PLAYING. HE [Brashear] WOULDN’T LAST TWO SECONDS!"
I thanked Nick for the autographed picture and totally agreed with him!

Four Days After U.S. Men National Team Lost to Ghana in World Cup All I Can Say is Wait ‘Till Four Years!

The run that the USA was on came to an abrupt halt last Saturday as Ghana won the game 2-1 in extra time and knocked the USA out of the World Cup. My Wife and I attended our Nephew’s graduation party and managed to watch the first part of the game on the bar TVs. On the drive home we switched between the Philadelphia and NYC ESPN radio stations. Then we watched the rest of the second half and extra time on TV. This game and the entire World Cup comes down to this simple stat:
Playing more than 390 minutes in the tournament, the Americans led for only three minutes - the time between Landon Donovan's goal in added time against Algeria on Wednesday and the final whistle, clinching first place in Group C.

We kept pressing our luck," captain Carlos Bocanegra said. "We put ourselves behind the eight-ball too many times in this tournament. It eventually ran out tonight."
In the 62nd minute Donovan scored the lone USA goal on a penalty kick. In the 81st minute Bocanegra got the ball to Altidore. Jozy battled the defender and, after some contact, ripped a shot while falling down and just missed the far corner. That encapsulated the game right there. I also wish that first goal for Ghana didn’t go in but it was a rocket that got between Howard and the post. When the Brooklyn Dodgers kept losing to the New York Yankees in the World Series the manta was “Wait ‘till next year!” This team’s manta should be “Wait ‘till Four Years!” I enjoyed watching the team play and it made me proud of them. If you’d like to see the team play there is a friendly scheduled against Brazil on Tuesday, August 10th at the new Meadowlands Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ at 8:00 PM EDT.

Tuesday, June 29th Thoughts on Rangers Free Agency Moves

I’d love to see the New York Rangers become the Eastern Conference version of the Chicago Blackhawks; with a group of talented young players and a few key veteran stars playing as a team. Jim Dolan will have his hands full on July 1st with the LeBron James Sweepstakes but he can’t forget about the other team that plays in The Garden (and I don’t mean the Liberty). The Rangers need a few top line offensive players who can score and a shutdown defenseman or a top defensive pairing would be nice. I hope they at least take care of a few of their own now. I’ll post more on the Blueshirts tomorrow.
  • Marc Staal – restricted free agents, sign to multiyear deal
  • Dan Girardi – restricted free agents, sign to two-year deal
  • Brandon Prust – restricted free agent, sign to one or two-year deal
  • Erik Christensen – restricted free agent, sign to one-year deal
  • Vinny Prospal – unrestricted free agent, sign to another one-year deal
  • Jody Shelley – unrestricted free agent, sign to one or two-year deal

Marlins Blow Out Mets 10-3 at San Juan, Puerto Rico Monday

The Florida Marlins played a home game against the visiting New York Mets last night and blew them out 10-3. R.A. Dickey did not have it for New York giving up 5 earned runs, 5 hits with 1 walk and 3 strikeouts in 5.0 innings to suffer his first loss of the season. Nieve and Igarashi weren’t much better giving up the other 5 Florida runs in the remaining 3 innings pitched. A bright spot for the Mets was Jason Bay who went 2-for-4 with 2 home runs and 3 RBIs. This could be a good sign for Bay as he hasn’t found his home run swing the entire season. David Wright continues to tear the cover off the ball also going 2-for-4. If Wright keeps this up he is a serious contender for National League MVP. Jose Reyes had a tough time in the field playing on the artificial surface. Maybe he should watch some film of how the great Ozzie Smith played shortstop in St. Louis. Jose has a cannon for an arm and should play back a few steps. He could still reach first with his arm and even bounce it to first base like The Wizard of Oz. Hey, better yet talk to Keith Hernandez who played with Ozzie for the Cardinals. Angel Pagan hopes to be in the lineup tonight and is looking forward to playing in Puerto Rico.

Former Rangers Head Coach Tom Renney Named Oilers’ Head Coach

The former New York Rangers’ head coach Tom Renney has been named new head coach of the Edmonton Oilers. This is a great move for Renney as he can help that team. The Oilers are not exactly a well oiled machine so to speak at the moment and Renney has a lot to do to get the team going in the right direction. In some respects he had the same task with the Rangers and did a great job getting them back into the playoffs after the lockout. He’s one of the good guys in hockey and took the fall for Glen Sather’s (aka The Savior) decisions in New York.

Devils Got their Man as John MacLean Named Head Coach

The New Jersey Devils got their man as John MacLean was named head coach for the upcoming season. I posted on May 7th that this hire makes the most sense for the organization as they could use some consistency behind the bench. Larry Robinson will return to be an assistant coach with the team and the other coach has not yet been named. Jamie Langenbrunner will remain as the Devils’ captain.
“I’m whatever is called for that day," MacLean said last season when asked about his coaching style. "If it calls for teaching and being nice or if it calls for breaking a stick and yelling and screaming, then that’s what it calls for that day.”

Red Bulls Shut Out Wizards 3-0 at Kansas City, KS for Third Straight Win Saturday

The New York Red Bulls defeated the Kansas City Wizards on the road 3-0 in a huge win Saturday. This is the first MLS game for New York since the World Cup break began three weeks ago and this makes three straight wins. The game was even through the first half but Red Bull Salou Ibrahim broke the scoreless tie on a header in the 54th minute on a bad clearing attempt at the top of the box by the Wizards’ defenders. Salou was close to being offside, but the goal counted. The Red Bull captain Juan Pablo Angel scored the 2nd goal in the 83rd minute. Angel took control of the ball in the box and held off the Wizard defender Hohlbein and shot underneath the goalkeeper Nielsen. Roy Miller was substituted into the game for New York and just missed wide off the post a minute after coming into the game. Angel scored the 3rd Red Bull goal and his second of the game in the 1st minute of second half stoppage time by holding off a challenge and dancing around the box with the ball and pushing it into the net to seal the deal for the Red Bulls.

Mets Lost 6-0 to Twins Saturday but Returned Favor with 6-0 Shut Out Today at Citi Field

The New York Mets lost Saturday 6-0 to the Minnesota Twins with former Twin on the mound Johan Santana for the Mets. It was the first time Santana faced his former team during the season and didn’t look good. Santana was roughed up for 5 earned runs, 8 hits with 2 walks and 4 strikeouts in 6.0 innings. Igarashi and Dessens pitched scoreless 7th and 8th innings. Fernando Nieve gave up 1 earned run in the 9th on 2 hits. The Mets could only muster 3 hits off of Twin starter Carl Pavano who pitched a complete game win Saturday. Today was a different story with the Mets hit parade coming out again. New York took the rubber game of the series 6-0 to return the favor from yesterday on 14 team hits. Three Mets had 3-hit games: Jesus Felicano (who played center field), David Wright and Jeff Francouer. Francoeur hit a home run in the 4th and today’s output broke a 2-for-23 slump at the plate. Wright and Davis hit back-to-back homers in the 5th inning to shell shock Twin starting pitcher Scott Baker. Davis’ homer was a bomb to right-center field that landed on the bridge approximately 450 feet from home plate. Met starter Jon Niese was excellent giving up no earned runs, 4 hits with 3 walks and 5 strikeouts in 6.0 innings. Dessens, Feliciano and Parnell each pitched a scoreless 7th, 8th and 9th innings to secure the shutout. The Mets travel to San Juan, Puerto Rico to play a 3-game series with the Florida Marlins.

U.S. Men National Team Plays Ghana Today at 2:30 in Huge World Cup Match on ABC TV – LET’S GO USA!

The USA plays Ghana today in what can only be called a revenge match as Ghana knocked them out in their last World Cup appearance. After the USA’s story book finish on Wednesday they need to get on the scoreboard early and first to keep the pressure on Ghana. Bradley will be making some changes in the lineup but expect USA to come out firing on all cylinders. Ex-Red Bull Jozy Altidore was a monster on Wednesday and look for him to be the same in this game. Wouldn’t it be great if the Red Bulls could get him and their old goalkeeper back! LET’S GO USA!

Mets Continue Winning Ways at Home with 5-2 Victory Over Twins at Citi Field Friday

The New York Mets defeated the Minnesota Twins 5-2 last night at Citi Field behind the strong pitching of Mike Pelfrey. Big Pelf gave up only 2 earned runs, 6 hits (HR) with 2 strikeouts in 6.0 innings to earn his 10th win of the season. Parnell and Feliciano pitched scoreless 7th and 8th innings and Francisco Rodriguez pitched a scoreless 9th to earn his 17th save of the season. The Mets were 2-for-5 with runners in scoring position and took advantage of their opportunities. Jose Reyes continues his hot play going 2-for-5, 1 run and 1 RBI. Reyes has his average up to .288 on the year. David Wright went 2-for-3 (HR), 2 runs and 2 RBIs and continues to be in the zone. Josh Thole started at catcher for the Mets and was hitless in 3 at-bats. The Mets continue their interleague series with the Twins in a 1:10 PM matinee at Citi Field. Met starter Johan Santana goes up against his old team for the first time since his trade to the Mets.

Mets Clobbered Tigers 14-6 in Citi Field Hit Parade Tuesday

The New York Mets clobbered the visiting American League Detroit Tigers 14-6 last night. The Mets were led by center fielder Angel Pagan who was a home run shy of hitting for the cycle. Pagan went 4-for-6, with 3 runs and 4 RBIs to raise his average to .304 on the season. Pagan’s playing time will take a dip when and if Carlos Beltran comes back but that will be what I call a luxury problem for manager Jerry Manuel. Pagan will most likely platoon in right field with Jeff Francoeur. Pagan also has a 10 game hitting streak. David Wright had a 3-hit night, with 2 walks, 3 runs and 2 RBIs. Rookie Ike Davis went 3-for-6 with 3 runs and 2 RBIs. Met starting pitcher Jon Niese did not allow a hit for the first 3 innings but had to wait a while to pitch the 4th with the Mets long bottom of the 3rd (scoring 8 runs) and an hour plus long rain delay. Niese gave up a booming 2-run homer to Tiger Brennan Boesch that went over the right-center field fence at the 415 foot mark. Tiger pitchers weren’t good as they gave up 7 walks, hit 2 batters and allowed Jose Reyes to reach on a third strike that got past their catcher for a wild pitch. Fernando Nieve came into the game in relieve and pitched 2.1 innings to earn the win. Met Bobby Parnell pitched a scoreless 8th inning in his first appearance of the season after just being called up from the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons. Igarashi closed out the game by pitching a scoreless 9th. The series continues tonight at Citi Field as R.A. Dickey will start for the Mets tonight and Jerry Seinfeld will be in the TV booth for a few innings. I heard Seinfeld speaking with Steve (aka The Schmoozer) Somers on WFAN-AM the other day about his upcoming appearance.

Churchill Cup Rugby Tournament at Red Bull Arena with England, Canada and France Taking Top Honors Saturday

My Wife, friend and I had a great time at the Churchill Cup last Saturday held at Red Bull Arena. The final scores of each match were:
  • Russia 38-19 over Uruguay for Fifth Place
  • England 38-18 over Canada for First Place
  • France 24-10 over U.S. for Third Place
We could only stay for the first two games (Russia/Uruguay and England/Canada) so we missed the U.S. unfortunately. The England/Canada game was played at a much faster pace and higher level then Russia/Uruguay. Russia ran all over Uruguay’s defense in the 2nd half and the score could have been higher. For the first game we sat in Section 130 in the corner but moved to Section 133 behind the try line in the South Ward for the second game and enjoyed the view much better. It’s amazing seeing the speed and agility of the players along with their toughness. England took an early 17-0 lead and it looked like it was going to be a blowout. Canada mounted a nice comeback and brought the score to 20-13 at the half but missed two conversions and a penalty kick that would have tied the game at 20. Too much England in the 2nd half and they pulled away for the win. Unfortunately the U.S. Men’s National Rugby Team lost to France 24-10 but the score didn’t indicate how close the game was. The U.S. was down by just one try for nearly 35 minutes of the second half, before allowing France to clinch the win. We will definitely be back next year if the finals of the tournament are held at the Cathedral of Football (aka Red Bull Arena) again. I took the picture from Section 133.

Tuesday, June 22nd Installment of What’s Up Jerry?

I hope the Mets don’t trade the future, by way of Jenrry Mejia for a rent-a-starter in Cliff Lee. Lee will want an insane amount of money for a new contract next year even if he wanted to sign with the Mets. The Mets optioned Mejia to the Double-A affiliate Binghamton Mets to work as a starter. Bobby Parnell was brought up from the Triple-A affiliate Buffalo Bisons which means that we won’t see John Maine in a Met uniform again. What’s going on with Carlos Beltran and Luis Castillo? The word was Beltran was playing “an extended spring training” weeks ago and since then nothing. Beltran was placed on the 60-day disabled list on May 25th.

Yankees Take Final Two Subway Series Games from Mets 5-3 and 4-0 at the Stadium Over Weekend

The New York Yankees took the remaining two games from the New York Mets 5-3 and 4-0 at Yankee Stadium. On Saturday Yankee starter Phil Hughes was excellent in defeating the Mets and counterpart Mike Pelfrey. It was only Big Pelf’s second loss of the season. Jose Reyes did all he could by hitting 2 home runs in the loss. Hughes’ only loss was to the Mets and Mike Pelfrey at Citi Field, by a score of 5-3 as a matter of fact. After the rocky start Hughes stymied the Mets and cruised in his 7.0 innings pitched for the win. Pelfrey gave up 5 earned runs, 7 hits, with 3 walks and 2 strikeouts in 7.0 innings. Igarashi came in to pitch a scoreless 8th. Sunday was no better for the Mets as the Yanks shut them out 4-0. Met starter Johan Santana gave up a grand slam home run to Mark Teixeira yesterday that capped a great week for the Yankee first baseman. Tex hit a homer off of Pelfrey on Saturday and another off of Phillie Roy Halladay on Tuesday. It looks like he’s on his way. CC Sabathia was excellent by blowing the Mets away yesterday giving up no earned runs, only 4 hits with 2 walks and 6 strikeouts in 8.0 innings. Rivera came in to seal the deal in the 9th in a non-save situation. Johan Santana did not have the velocity on his fastball and made a bad pitch to Tex in the grand slam. Santana gave up 4 runs, 8 hits, with 1 walk and 3 strikeouts in 6.0 innings. Mejia and Nieve pitched scoreless 7th and 8th innings in the loss.

Posting Tomorrow Morning on Churchill Cup Rugby Tournament, Mets vs. Yankees and U.S. Men National Team in the World Cup

I’ll be posting on the Churchill Cup Rugby Tournament, Subway Series and USA in the World Cup.

Happy Father’s Day Dad, I Love and Miss You

I have been thinking of my Dad today and miss Him terribly. My Dad passed away in the summer of 1986. Unfortunately my Dad did not see the New York Mets win the World Series in October of that year or the New York Giants win the Super Bowl a few months later. That summer was excruciating for my Dad and our family and one of the only bright spots was watching the New York Mets destroy the National League. Happy Father’s Day Dad, I love and miss you.

Heading to Red Bull Arena for the Churchill Cup Rugby Tournament Today

My Wife, friend and I are heading to Red Bull Arena for the Churchill Cup Rugby Tournament shortly. Teams from USA, Russia, France, Canada, England and Uruguay will be playing the final round today. LET’S GO USA!

Takahashi and Mets Shut Out Hated Yankees 4-0 at Yankee Stadium Friday

The New York Mets defeated their hated cross-town rivals the New York Yankees 4-0 at Yankee Stadium last night. The game meant a lot to the Mets as both teams downplayed it in the past as just another game. The Mets have won 8 games in a row and 12 of their last 13. As David Wright dove into home plate and beat the throw in the 1st inning the emotion showed on his face. Hisanori Takahashi was excellent again for the Mets as he gave up no earned runs, only 4 hits, with 2 walks and 3 strikeouts and narrowly outpitched Yankee starter Javier Vazquez. Chan Ho Park gave up 2 earned runs for the Yanks and Boone Logan gave up another. Pedro Feliciano pitched two innings for the Mets and got in and out of trouble but gave up no earned runs. Francisco Rodriguez came into the game in the 9th, struck out Derek Jeter and got Nick Swisher to foul out to end the game to earn his 16th save of the season. Angel Pagan had a 2-run double in the 8th. Jose Reyes and Jeff Francoeur each had 2-hit games for the Mets. Wright doubled with two outs in the first and scored on Ike Davis’ single. Reyes added an RBI single in the 9th. Jason Bay was back in the lineup for the Mets in left field and went 0-for-3 with a walk. The Subway Series continues as the two teams play a matinee at 1:05 PM today at the Stadium.

Red Bulls Host Brazilian Side Cruzeiro in Friendly Match at Red Bull Arena Friday, June 18th at 8:00 PM

The New York Red Bulls host the Brazilian side Cruzeiro tonight at Red Bull Arena. Cruzeiro are the second storied Brazilian side to take on New York, as Santos helped open Red Bull Arena on March 20th, a 3-1 Red Bulls win. Cruzeiro defeated New England Revolution, 3-0, on June 13th. Some of the Red Bull players are back from injury and should play tonight. Watching the home team at Red Bull Arena is a great way to spend a beautiful evening.

U.S. Men National Team Plays Slovenia in Must Win Today at 10:00 AM EDT on ESPN – Five American Players Former MetroStars/Red Bulls

USA plays Slovenia today in what looks like a must win for the Americans. After the 1-1 draw last Saturday vs. England they will be in great shape to move out of Group C if they defeat Slovenia today. I would like to see the USA move the ball and more aggressively, led by Landon Donovan and Jozy Altidore. There are five former New York MetroStars/Red Bulls playing for the U.S.: Tim Howard, Ricardo Clark, Michael Bradley, Edson Buddle and Jozy Altidore — as well as head coach Bob Bradley. BBC Sport’s Preview can be found here. LET’S GO USA!
"[Slovenia] aren't going to be spectacular, but they're going to be a good, solid team and they're going to be difficult to beat," U.S. midfielder Landon Donovan said. "In theory it seems easier because they don't have a Wayne Rooney or a Frank Lampard or a Steven Gerrard. The reality is, when you have a team that plays well together, it becomes very difficult to beat a team like that."

Jets Held Final Minicamp at New Meadowlands Stadium in Front of 12,000 Fans Thursday

The New York Jets held their final minicamp at their new Meadowlands Stadium today in front of a nice crowd of 12,000.
Ryan, who went over the strengths of his team, many of which were on display at this practice, and concluded: "We're loaded as a football team. I keep going back to what my dad said: 'Just don't mess it up.' And I don't think we will. This team has no excuses. Our team knows it — we're chasing a Super Bowl."
Sanchez declined to get caught up in an early "If you were a tree, what tree would you be?" Super Bowl hype week moment when he was asked, "If Joe Namath was Broadway Joe, what does that make you?" "I'm just Mark," he said.
[Sanchez said] “As a team, that means the world to us," he said of the Jets' reception today. "We really feed off our fans. We felt it that last game against Cincinnati at home. We want to get a playoff game here. I think the fans feel that, too. Hopefully some great things will happen in this stadium.'

Mets Defeated Indians 8-4 at Progressive Field Wednesday

The New York Mets continue to win and took the second game of their series in Cleveland against the Indians last night. The Mets as a team had 14 hits and Jon Niese pitched well to earn the win. Niese gave up only 3 earned runs in 7.0 innings. Angel Pagan led the way going 3-for-4. Ike Davis, Jason Bay and Jeff Francoeur each had 2-hit games. It is great seeing Francoeur and Pagan continue their hot play at the plate. One great stat from last night was that the Mets were 7-for-14 with runners in scoring position. Elmer Dessens closed out the game by shutting out the Indians and giving up only 1 hit.

Domenik Hixon Tore ACL at New York Giants' Minicamp Tuesday and Will Miss Entire 2010 Season

Domenik Hixon tore his ACL in his right knee yesterday at the Giants minicamp held at the new Meadowlands Stadium. As Hixon was fielding a punt his foot caught in the new FieldTurf and he tore the ACL in his right knee. Head coach Tom Coughlin said the turf was unusually soft but Hixon was wearing the proper cleats. This hurts the Giants and Hixon as he signed a one-year non-guaranteed contract with the Giants this spring. I wonder how many other players on the Giants and Jets will have concerns with the turf.

Mets Rally with 5 Runs in 5th Inning to Defeat Indians 7-6 Tuesday

The New York Mets defeated the Cleveland Indians last night 7-6 and finally scored some runs for a struggling Johan Santana. It was the Mets’ fifth win in a row and they’re only a ½ game out of first place. Jon Niese is pitching tonight and he’s been excellent his last two starts since coming off the disabled list.

New York Jets Cut PSL Prices for End Zone Seats Up to 50%

Since the New York Jets cannot sell 8,000 PSLs for end-zone seats they have cut the prices. My friend’s seats that I share games with are in the Mezzanine Corner 200s (Concourse 2). Ticket prices have gone up of course. Within the last ten years an upper-bowl 300s sideline ticket was $60. It went to $65 then $75 for the past few seasons. Now that equivalent ticket in the new stadium is $95. Without the PSLs the cost would be a lot more manageable but many longtime seasons ticket holders moved upstairs in the new stadium to avoid the PSL entirely.

Tuesday, June 15th Continued Thoughts on Jets Offseason Moves Thus Far

Here are a few continued thoughts on the Jets wheeling and dealings thus far:
  • The latest nonsense with Darrelle Revis’ contract negotiations has to come to a resolution. Revis said the Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum told him in early April that he believed he should be the highest-paid cornerback in the league. Head coach Rex Ryan has stated that Revis is the best defensive player in the league. If the Jets promised a new extension then they should make that happen before long. Revis also can’t make Ryan look like a dope in front of the press as he did yesterday by faking his hamstring injury.
  • New contracts should be done with defensive end Shaun Ellis’ “The Big Cat”, linebacker David Harris and center Nick Mangold as well.
  • The Jets have caved and have lowered the price on unsold PSLs after owner Woody Johnson said he would not. I’m glad the Jets see this as the only viable option to sell out the new stadium and keep the possibility of embarrassing home TV blackouts from occurring. No fan needs a repeat of the 1977 TV blackouts.

Mets Clobbered Orioles 11-4 at Oriole Park at Camden Yards to Complete Sweep Sunday

My Wife and I were driving out of Baltimore yesterday as the fans were going into Oriole Park forty minutes before game time. I tried talking Her into taking a detour into the parking to attend the game but it wasn’t meant to be and glad we didn’t as traffic and pouring rain on the drive home was a bit much. The Orioles play-by-play radio announcers on 105.7 The Fan are excellent by the way as we listened until losing the signal and switching over to WFAN-AM. Oriole starter Kevin Millwood was shelled yesterday giving up 5 earned runs in the 1st inning and it got uglier from there. David Wright hit a 2-run homer in the 1st inning and another in the 6th leading the way with 4 RBIs. Chris Carter (aka Animal) hit another homer in this game as well. Jose Reyes contributed 2 hits, Jason Bay went 4-for-4 with a homer and Alex Cora went 3-for-4 with 2 RBIs. The Mets needed to sweep this series and they showed up and did so. We were so glad to go to the first two games of the series. The Mets are 7 games over .500 and in second place, 1 ½ games behind the National League East Leading Atlanta Braves. The Mets travel to Cleveland to play the Indians for a 3-game series before heading to Yankee Stadium for the second Subway Series this season.

U.S. Men National Team Play to 1-1 Draw with England Saturday and Mets Complete Sweep of Orioles Sunday with 11-4 Victory

What an excellent weekend of sports as the New York Mets complete the sweep of the Orioles with an 11-4 clobbering today and USA plays to a 1-1 draw with England. I will post more details on the Mets as well as the World Cup tomorrow.

Takahashi Takes Care of Business as Mets Defeated Orioles 3-1 at Oriole Park at Camden Yards Saturday

It was One More Saturday Night as the visiting New York Mets took the second game of the series from the Baltimore Orioles 3-1 last night. My Wife and I sat in the Terrace Box seats again, this time in Section 47. The game time temperature was a lot hotter at 88 degrees with moderate humidity but it was still a great night to be at the ballpark. Met starting pitcher Hisanori Takahashi was excellent giving up only 1 earned run, 6 hits, with 1 walk and 2 strikeouts in 7.0 innings to earn his 5th win of the season. Jerry Manuel went to Pedro Feliciano again in the 8th inning and he pitched very well only giving up a double. Francisco Rodriguez pitched a scoreless 9th inning for 13th save of the season. K-Rod hit Oriole center fielder Adam Jones but got out of the game when Oriole catcher Matt Wieters pinch hit in the 9th and hit into a game ending double-play. Jose Reyes led off the game trying to drag bunt for a hit but instead hit a home run just over the left center field fence. David Wright was the Mets’ designated hitter and Fernando Tatis started at third base. In the 6th inning Wright hit into what should have been a double-play but ex-Met Ty Wiggington was pulled off first base with a high throw and Ruben Tejada scored for the Mets. I was saying that the Mets could use an insurance run just before Jeff Francoueur led off the 8th with a solo home run to right center field. The Mets complete the three-game series this afternoon as Mike Pelfrey goes for his 9th win of the season for New York. After the game we stopped at the Inner Harbor for a walk and stopped to listen to a local band. I chatted with a man from Baltimore about the Orioles and Mets. I told him that Bobby Valentine would bring a mentality of winning to the Orioles if they hire him to manage. The Orioles have young talent but need a mindset of winning 2-of-3 vs. 1-of-3 each series. I took the picture from our seats in the Terrace Box, Section 47.

R.A. Dickey Was Excellent as Mets Defeated Orioles 5-1 at Oriole Park at Camden Yards Friday

What a night to be at the ballpark as the Mets defeated the Orioles 5-1 at beautiful Oriole Park at Camden Yards behind R.A. Dickey’s excellent start. My Wife and I met a nice man and couple before the game as we enjoyed BBQ sandwiches. There were plenty of Met fans walking around town and in the stands. Dickey gave up only 1 earned run, 7 hits, with no walks and 8 strikeouts in 7.0 innings. He was throwing strikes all night. Dickey gave up first batter hits in the 4th through 7th innings but gave up his only run in the 7th. In the 4th inning Dickey gave up two singles and a walk to load the bases with no outs. He then struck out the next two batters and got the third out on a pop up to David Wright. I knew then that the Mets were going to win the game. In the 8th inning Pedro Feliciano got into trouble giving up 3 hits but got a double-play and a strikeout to keep the Orioles off the scoreboard. Francisco Rodriguez came into the game in the 9th and struck out the side to end the game, but did give up a double. It was good seeing the K-Rod of old. Jose Reyes, Wright and Chris Carter had great offensive games. Reyes got things started with a leadoff double in the 1st inning and scored on Wright’s RBI single. Reyes also singled in the 9th, stole second base but was left stranded. Wright went 3-for-4 (double) with 2 RBIs. The Mets DH Carter went 1-for-3 with a huge 3-run home run in the 4th inning. We’re going to see the USA vs. England World Cup match this afternoon somewhere in town and going to Met game tonight. I took the picture from our seats in the Terrace Box, Section 45.

Driving to Baltimore to See Mets Play Orioles Friday and Saturday Night

My Wife and I are driving to Baltimore this morning to see the New York Mets take on the Baltimore Orioles tonight and tomorrow night. Oriole Park at Camden Yards is an excellent ballpark to visit. We went last season and had a great time and this year the Mets are playing so that should make it even better. If you visit and have time I recommend taking the stadium tour. It’s amazing how the plans were scrapped for the original stadium last minute and changed to what you now see, an intimate park that is fan friendly and built around the old idea that a ballpark should be contained within the confines of one city block. Oriole Park was the first of the modern, intimate ballparks in the Major Leagues. We’re looking forward to BBQ at Boog Powell’s tent as well. I took the picture from our seats for the day game we attended. LET’S GO METS!

Mets Split Day/Night Doubleheader as Niese Pitches Brilliant One Hitter in Nightcap – Mets Lost Day Game 4-2 and Won Night Game 3-0

Johan Santana had a tough time in the day game yesterday giving up 4 earned runs, 8 hits with 4 walks and 1 strikeout in 6.2 innings as the Mets fell to the San Diego Padres 4-2. He was getting in and out of trouble but didn’t have command of his breaking ball, which was always his out pitch. Hitters are laying off the breaking ball and sitting on his fastball which is not as fast as it used to be. It didn’t help matters that the Mets’ offense got all of 2 hits in the game and they continue to not give Johan run support. The nightcap was a different story and it was all Jon Niese who pitched a phenomenal 1 hitter as the Mets won 3-0. Niese’s lone hit he gave up was a double in the 3rd inning to Chris Denorfia. Niese then got the next 21 outs of the game in order to end the game. The Mets travel to Baltimore for a 3-game series against the Orioles at beautiful Oriole Park at Camden Yards.

Congratulations to the 2010 Stanley Cup Champions the Chicago Blackhawks Who Defeated the Philadelphia Flyers (aka Effers) Four Games to Two to Take Cup

The Chicago Blackhawks defeated the Philadelphia Flyers (aka Effers) last night 4-3 in overtime to win the Stanley Cup Finals four games to two. It’s the first Cup for the Blackhawks since 1961 and the Hawks did a tremendous job winning it this season. Last year they came up a little short losing to the Detroit Red Wings in the third round. In the previous ten years to last season the Blackhawks only made the Playoffs once and lost in the first round when they did. It was great seeing Chris Pronger whine to the refs as he was being escorted to the penalty box last night, twice. My Wife pointed out other times where he should have been called for penalties. The Hockey News had taken a poll of NHL players and Chris Pronger was rated the #2 whiner in the NHL, just behind Sidney (aka Cindy) Crosby.

Home Sweet Home for Mets as They Win Nine in a Row

The New York Mets continue their hot play at home this season with their 2-1 win last night on the walk-off homer by rookie first baseman Ike Davis last night in the 11th inning. Their series continues tonight at rainy Citi Field where Johan Santana takes the mound in a game the Mets hope to get in. The San Diego Padres are no slouches in the National League and for the Mets to be in this game they need to score runs for their ace. Santana had two excellent outings on the road recently and the Mets could not come up with any runs for him unfortunately. On June 2nd Santana went 7 innings at San Diego and on May 28th he went 8 innings giving up no earned runs in each outing. The Mets have to find a way to get on the scoreboard early and give Johan a lead for a change. Johan’s one of the most competitive players on the team and the offense has to rally around him, starting tonight. If they can take at least 2-of-3 from San Diego and play well in the interleague series this weekend at the Baltimore Orioles that will put them in excellent shape in the National League East. LET’S GO METS!

Mets Defeated Padres 2-1 on Davis' Walk-Off Home Run in the 11th Inning

The New York Mets won their third game in a row tonight as Ike Davis hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the 11th inning to defeat the San Diego Padres 2-1. I will post more on this game and thoughts on the Mets’ season tomorrow.

Mets Comeback from 5-0 Deficit to Edge Marlins 7-6 at Citi Field for Sweep Sunday

The New York Mets showed a lot of tenacity in their 7-6 comeback over the Florida Marlins at Citi Field Sunday. The Mets were down 5-0 going into the bottom of the 6th but they knocked in 7 runs in the next three innings to win the game. I will post more on the game and impressions of the Mets season thus far tomorrow morning.

Let’s Hope Omar Minaya (aka Nomore Goodbya) Didn’t Pull a Fast One Placing Oliver Perez on the 15-Day Disabled List Saturday

The New York Mets placed Oliver Perez on the 15-day disabled list Saturday due to a sudden injury to his right knee. The move to the DL was retroactive to last Tuesday so it could free-up a roster spot for Jon Niese who pitched Saturday against the Marlins. It’s being reported that a few Major League clubs have complained and that Major League Baseball is looking into the validity of the move. Since Perez landed on the DL the Mets didn’t have to send another player back to their Buffalo Bisons farm team. If the Mets did pull a fast one they certainly would not be first to do so or the last. Having this baloney float over the team now doesn’t help so let’s hope it’s true. I can see the 60-day disabled list in the near future for Ol’ Ollie!

Red Bulls Shut Out Chivas USA 1-0 at Red Bull Arena for Second Win in a Row Saturday

The New York Red Bulls won their second game in a row as they shut out Chivas USA 1-0 at Red Bull Arena. Mike Petke sat this one out, his first in his MLS career. Petke’s had three tough games in a row where he’d gotten beaten and the opposition scored on Bouna Time. Carlos Mendes got the start and played well. Dane Richards also sat out with a hamstring injury and the great young Tony Tchani got the start. That guy’s going to be great. The Red Bulls moved the ball well and played a solid game. Unfortunately Sinisa Ubiparipovic pulled up while going for the ball in the 8th minute and left as Roy Miller was subbed into the match. Ubiparipovic has a hamstring strain and thank goodness he’ll have time to rest with the World Cup break upon us. Seth Stammler scored his 2nd goal of the season and broke the scoreless tie in the 27th minute on a rocket outside the box. He took the ball off a poor clearing attempt on a mishit Juan Pablo Angel header, turned and fired the ball into the left-corner of the net. Late in the 2nd half Joel Lindpere put a perfectly placed ball in front of Angel on a free kick and Angel scored but the goal was called back as the assistant referee confirmed that Angel was just offside. That would have sealed the deal. The Red Bulls held on for a terrific win and are in a much better position being tied for 1st place in the Eastern Conference going into the World Cup break. Chivas USA did not have defender Jonathan Bornstein as he’s playing with the U.S. Men National Team in the World Cup.

Mets Clobbered Marlins 6-1 at Citi Field Saturday

The New York Mets clobbered the Florida Marlins yesterday on national TV 6-1. Jon Niese came off the disabled list and pitched a terrific game giving up only 1 earned run, 6 hits with 1 walk and 6 big strikeouts in 7.0 innings. Mejia pitched a scoreless 8th and Nieve finished it with a scoreless 9th. Ike Davis led the Met hit parade with 4 hits, 3 runs and 1 RBI. David Wright matched his home run total from last season by hitting his 10th, a 2-run shot in the 3rd inning. It was towering shot down the left field line that just stayed fair and landed on top of the Acela Club patio. Wright had 2 hits on the day. Jeff Francoeur went 2-for-4 with 1 RBI. Ruben Tejada also contributed with a 2-run double. There’s no place like home for the New York Metropolitans.

Heading to TD Bank Ballpark as Somerset Patriots Host Newark Bears

My Wife and I will be with our friends at TD Bank Ballpark tonight as the Newark Bears continue their series against the visiting Newark Bears. LET’S GO PATRIOTS!

Oh Dickey You’re So Fine Earning Win as Mets Take Game 4-3 From Marlins at Citi Field Friday

The New York Mets defeated the visiting Florida Marlins 4-3 with a late game comeback. Starting pitcher R.A. Dickey was so fine last night giving up 3 earned runs, 7 hits, with 2 walks and 4 strikeouts in 6.1 innings to earn the win and is now 3-0 on the season. Feliciano, Dessens and Rodriguez finished the game to give New York the much needed win. There’s no place like home where the Mets are playing wining baseball. K-Rod earned his 11th save of the season but made it an adventure once again. Ike Davis continues to struggle going 0-for-4 at the plate. Ruben Tejada was recalled from Buffalo to replace the injured Luis Castillo at second base. Jeff Francoeur went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Angel Pagan made a great throw to gun down one of the best players in Major League Baseball Hanley Ramirez at the plate. The Mets went 3-for-9 with runners in scoring position as well.

“Once a Red Bull Always a Red Bull” and “Luck of the Irish” at Red Bull Arena!

As we sat in Section 132 at Red Bull Arena Wednesday enjoying the match against the Houston Dynamo the Patriarch from Ireland (visiting Granddaughter, Daughter and Son-in-law) turned and said to me “Once a Red Bull Always a Red Bull!” I loved it. Last night as my Wife and I ate dinner with them, their Son (also my soccer mentor) said “It’s the Luck of the Irish!” His Dad, the Patriarch said he’d be happy to work for the Red Bulls as their lucky charm if they’d pay his airfare from the Emerald Isle. I think it’s an excellent idea and I say yes!
