17-Year-Old Melanie Oudin Upsets Elena Dementieva at 2009 US Open Yesterday

The upset of the tournament happened yesterday when the third ranked American woman 17-year-old Melanie Oudin defeated the number four player in the world.

From usopen.org:

“I’m so excited, you have no idea,” she said in her on-court interview after the match. but the crowd certainly did: the volume of cheers grew steadily and reverberated throughout Arthur Ashe Stadium as it became increasingly likely that she would pull off the remarkable feat.

Oudin’s mental toughness was surely an important factor in her success. “I played with no fear today,” she said. Indeed, she demonstrates surprising focus for the youngest player in the Top 100. Her self-motivating “Come on!,” which she repeats throughout a match, has already become a well-known trademark and sign of her concentration.
