Kim Clijsters Upsets Serena Williams at 2009 US Open in Semifinals and Williams Lost in More Ways than One

Kim Clijsters of Belgium upset Serena Williams of the US in straight sets 6-4, 7-5 at the 2009 US Open last night. Clijsters left the tennis world to become a mom and was unranked coming into the tournament. Williams faulted on her first serve in the second set with the score 5-6, 15-30. On her second serve a line judge called a foot foul to make the score 15-40, double match point for Clijsters. Williams then berated the line judge as reported by cbsnews.com and said the following (... is equivalent to ing f-word):
"If I could, I would take this ... ball and shove it down your ... throat and kill you"
The tournament referee Brian Earley joined in the chat on court. Williams then said to the line judge (umpire):
"I didn't say I would kill you. Are you serious? Are you serious? I didn't say that."
Early said: "She was called for a foot fault, and a point later, she said something to a line umpire, and it was reported to the chair, and that resulted in a point penalty. And it just happened that point penalty was match point. It was a code violation for unsportsmanlike conduct."
Williams was assessed a code violation for smashing her racket after losing the first set. With the second violation she lost a point and the match. Clijsters had fewer double faults, unforced errors, more total points, receiving points won and winning percentage on second serve. Williams lost in more ways than one.
