The New York Rangers trimmed their training camp roster by 11 players on Monday including waiving defenseman Wade Redden. Moving Redden to the AHL affiliate Hartford Wolf Pack will clear $6.5 Million in salary cap this season (but still on the hook for the remaining 4 years of his contract). The move makes sense as he’s underachieved in New York the past two seasons. To be fair he was much better overall last year but his first season was brutal. I feel that if his salary was more like $1.750 Million he’d still be on the Rangers. If Redden refuses to report to Hartford his contract will be void and will become an unrestricted free agent. After seeing Hartford play the Lowell Devils twice last season at the Prudential Center Redden better be ready. The third and fourth lines beat the hell out of each other. Also assigned to Hartford were goaltender Chad Johnson and forwards Dane Byers, Evgeny Grachev, Kris Newbury, Dale Weise, Jeremy Williams and Mats Zuccarello. Defensemen Garnet Exelby, Brandon Manning and Alex Semenov were released. Banishing Redden to Hartford makes a lot of sense for the Rangers as they’re still in need of a top line centerman. A few players are vying for that spot but signing a true top center would be the best move. Trading Scott Gomez to the Canadiens to clear salary cap space for Marian Gaborik turned out great and hopefully a similar move can be made here.
