The Florida Marlins stole one from the New York Mets last night 2-1. I was out at the diner eating and watching the pitching duel go into the 7th inning between Josh Johnson and Johan Santana and said to my Wife “I bet the Marlins win it in the bottom of the 9th 2-1” and sure enough they did. The game just had that feel to it. Johnson shut down the Mets’ bats after the 2nd inning and their bullpen did the rest. Santana pitched as well as he has all season and ended up with the no decision. After the bottom of the 7th you could see the feeling on his face in the dugout as the score remained 1-1 and he was already out of the game. The Mets are 4-9 on the road and need to turn that around now before it’s too late. Manager Jerry Manuel said he may need to make adjustments in the lineup and if he does it should be this weekend, not sometime in August. Santana only made one mistake on a throwing error to second base in the 3rd inning that led to an unearned Marlin run as he airmailed the ball to the base. Santana’s changeup was unhittable as he only gave up 6 hits with 5 strikeouts. Once again the Mets could not hit the baseball and had too many strikeouts. David Wright has an incredible 46 strikeouts on the season! An unfortunate wild pitch in the bottom of the 9th by Met Fernando Nieve allowed Cody Ross to score the winning run for the Marlins. Nieve was trying to keep the ball down and bounced some into the dirt before he threw the wild pitch. The series continues in South Florida tonight.
