Jets Sit Atop the AFC East at 5-1 with NFL’s Best Record Heading into Bye Week

The New York Jets have won five games in a row to bring their record to 5-1, the NFL’s best as they head into their bye week. My Wife, friends and I witnessed their opening night loss to the Ravens unfortunately as it was their worst game by far. Good teams find a way to win and lesser teams find a way to lose. A big difference I see between this team and the team from last season is that mentality. The Jets played very well down the stretch last season but this team has found a way to win the games they may have lost last year. When the defense has not been the best the offense has picked them up, and vice versa. The special teams and kicking game have been outstanding and in fact better than predicted. Not signing running back Thomas Jones and kicker Jay Feeley were thought to be questionable moves but they’ve proven in the early going to have been the best moves the team could have made. Not signing those two players freed up money for running back LaDainian Tomlinson and kicker Nick Folk. Another unsung hero is little mentioned punter Steve Weatherford. Braylon Edwards has not dropped the ball (well he dropped one pass last game that would have been a first down) as he had in the past and Santonio Holmes should get more comfortable in the offense. My main concern is the status of Darrelle Revis’ hamstring injury and if the bye week will help him get to 100%. Head coach Rex Ryan describes Revis at 90% but from what I’ve seen he’s no where close to that. The signing of defensive end Trevor Pryce may be the steal of the season as it relegates Vernon Gholston back to special teams exclusively. When I saw #77 Kris Jenkins (The Human Truck) not get up from the turf on the sixth play of the season I thought the defense would take a huge hit. However nose tackle Sione Pouha has filled The Human Truck’s shoes admirably. There is a long way to go but the Jets have been terrific thus far.
